Glossary of Terms

This easy-to-use glossary will help you translate and define some of the botanical, horticultural and landscaping terms used on this site.

ALKALINE SOIL

Soil with a pH of more than 7.0 -- Plants growing in more alkaline (or basic) soil are less able to absorb phosphorus, iron, and manganese. If you have a soil that is highly alkaline, an easy way to make the soil more neutral is by adding the mineral lime. It can be purchased in powder form at most garden centers.  Most perennials grow best in soil with a pH of about 6 or 7.

ANNUAL
A plant that completes its growth cycle in one season.
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
The typical method of daylily plant propagation that involves vegetative division of a clump, rooting of proliferations, or cutting of mature crowns. Asexual propagation produces clones, i.e., plants that are identical in all attributes to the mother plant and to one another. Daylilies cannot be propagated true-to-form from seed.
